Akila Iyer started her education in Bharathanatyam more than twenty years ago under the tutelage of The Dhananjayans. Their school insists upon a full rounded experience that included practice of yoga and knowledge of the language Sanskrit. Her next guru, Chitra Visveswaran, was another great exponent in the art.
In 2001, with the encouragement of Guru Ms.Rekha Balaji of Syracuse, NY who then was moving out of Louisville, Akila started giving dance lessons. In 2006 her Guru Vandana Academy was formally registered and firmly took root.
Akira says: "As always learning is an unfathomable ocean and I venture to further perfect my art through other renowned artists of the day, including K. J. Sarasa in India and Dr. Vasundhara Dorasamy who visits Louisville to oversee my students. Through the years I have refined my techniques of dancing, teaching and choreographing and find them more fulfilling than ever. I consider it my blessed opportunity to be able to contribute in my small way to the purpose of this great ancient dance. "
